MUST VISIT SITES

EKASDHOO KUDA THILA

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from JW Marriott: 35 minutes by dhoni.

This Thila lies in the middle of the Ekasdhoo channel and requires a quick descent due to the strong current.  The top reef is around 18 metres high and it gradually descends to a sandy bottom of about 35 metres.  In the surrounding water of the Thila, divers can see many things, such as big dogtooth tunas, white-tip reef sharks, trevallies, schools of surgeonfish, and fusiliers.  During the southwest monsoon, manta sightings are common. This is on the top list to see in Shaviyani atoll.

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from JW Marriott: 35 minutes by dhoni.

Level: Open Water

Distance from JW Marriott: 45 minutes by dhoni.

TAnother top dive site to see is the incredible multilevel dive site with spectacular features at every depth. You’ll find abundant and interesting marine life along the small cracks of the wall. Here you’ll see colourful reef fish like anthias, wrasse, parrotfish, surgeonfish, lobster, lionfish, and numerous nudibranchs. A delightful dive site for macro lovers. On the west side of the reef, blue soft coral and feather stars cling to the reef surface along with starfish. Many more marine species such as shrimp, green turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, napoleons, and sometimes, even dolphins can be seen on this dive site.

This site is a favourite for both divers and snorkellers. The top reef is full of coral blocks and home to many colourful reef fish, and on the north side, a sharp drop off provides the most interesting wall for exploring.  Divers can take a peek into the small cracks and will find lobster, cleaning shrimp, moray eel, and nudibranchs.  The wall also has plenty of overhangs where you can easily spot nurse sharks or stingrays.  It is also common to see passing mantas, large dogtooth tunas, and Napoleons.  This is one of the few colourful dive sites in the atoll and has earned the moniker “rainbow wall.”
